When my partner and I first adopted Ollie from PAWS OF HAWAII I thought that I would be able to train him on my own. In fact I was certain that I would be able to teach him, how to walk properly without pulling and how to listen, when I called his name. But sadly it seemed as if Ollie didn’t want to listen. After that realization I decided to look for someone to help us train him.

While researching, I saw that often dog trainers would require you to drop off and leave your dog at their facility. Furthermore they use shock collars, or they were just really out of our budget. Nevertheless it was important to me to be apart of the training process. Because I wanted to gain a better bond with Ollie.: Off leash training Hawaii

Because I adopted Ollie through PAWS OF HAWAII, I saw that they used Sunshine Dogs Hawaii for their training services. That is why I reached out to Mela and we were able to schedule our first in person session. Immediately I thought that Mela’s way of training was different from obedience training. However to be honest when she told us no commands, I had so many questions, like

How would we call him?
Why can't we give commands?
What if he's doing something he's not supposed to be doing?

Certainly it took me and my family a while to get used to. During one of our first in person sessions with Mela she had us do walking exercises with Ollie. After the session we had clear instruction on what to work on without her. In fact I didn’t expect it would be too bad. Maybe some pulling or stopping to sniff things. But Ollie would jump, pull at my sleeves, and nip at me. Therefore he left me with bruises on my arms and legs. Because it was so painful, I wanted to give up.Off leash Training Hawaii

When I told Mela what was happening. Quickly she gave me advice on how to make him not jump and nip anymore. With time and patience he finally stopped jumping, nipping, and I am able to walk Ollie even without him pulling me or sniffing everything. I am so happy and proud of us. In addition we had some issues with leash aggression. Mela was able to help me to gain the confidence I needed. With time I was able to walk closer and closer to dogs.

Today we are able to meet and greet other dogs! A dream came true.

After a while I realized that Mela was not helping me to train Ollie. But she was teaching me to be a better leader, partner, and friend to Ollie. Mela taught me how to be more confident in myself. As a result Ollie found me reliable. As a result of that he is able to fully trust me.

Mela makes herself available to me through an app. I can easily message her and she quickly answers any questions or concerns I have. In addition she loves to see updates and videos of how we are doing. For us, she has gone above and beyond what I could ever expect or ask for.
